New Glarus Firefighters Carry on a 124-Year Tradition
On International Firefighters’ Day, New Glarus honors the volunteer firefighters who have answered calls for generations, leaving homes, jobs, meals and sleep to protect neighbors in moments of danger.
Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, New Glarus pauses to recognize the volunteer firefighters who have served this community for nearly 125 years.
Since the New Glarus Fire Department was organized in 1902, generations of local residents have answered the call, often leaving behind work, family, dinner, sleep or quiet moments at home because someone else needed help.

They have trained on Monday nights, served through bad weather, missed family time, carried heavy equipment, stood in smoke and darkness, and helped protect a village that has long depended on volunteers.
