New Glarus-Monticello Girls Take Second at Conference Meet

FORT ATKINSON, Wis. — The New Glarus-Monticello girls cross country team capped its Capitol Conference North schedule with a second-place finish Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Capitol Conference Championship meet at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club, while the boys placed fifth in a competitive six-team field.

Freshman Sadie Mitchell continued her impressive debut season, leading the girls with a fourth-place overall finish in 19 minutes, 6.3 seconds over the 5,000-meter course. Senior Holly Maynard joined her among the top 10, finishing eighth overall in 20:27.0.

The girls accumulated 46 points, finishing behind conference champion Lakeside Lutheran, which dominated the team standings with 23 points. Deerfield/Cambridge was third with 89, followed by Lake Mills with 91. In cross country, the lowest team score wins.

Mitchell was particularly impressive against a strong field. She finished just 15.8 seconds behind overall winner Aubrey Schoenemann of Lodi, who crossed the line in 18:50.5. Mitchell was the third scoring runner in the conference standings because Lodi did not field a complete scoring team.
