The New Glarus Glarner Knights fell to Cambridge Blue Jays in five sets Tuesday night inside the New Glarus High School gymnasium, but the 18-25, 27-25, 8-25, 27-25, 5-15 result told a larger story about how far these Glarner girls have come in less than three weeks.
Cambridge came to New Glarus having won 16 of its first 17 matches and carrying a 4-1 Capitol South record. The Blue Jays had also swept the Glarner Knights 25-19, 25-14, 25-14 when the teams first met Sept. 3 in Cambridge.
This time was different. New Glarus answered a first-set loss by grinding out a 27-25 win in the second, and after Cambridge dominated the third set, 25-8, the Knights responded again with another 27-25 victory to force a fifth set against a team that had lost only once all season.
Brynlee Schofield led New Glarus with eight kills, two aces and two blocks. Kalia Malaise had six kills, four aces, 15 assists and three blocks; Ellie Brenkman added six kills, four aces and six blocks; and Macy Pinnow finished with six kills and four aces.
