New Glarus Sixth Graders Continue 60-Year Wyalusing Tradition

For generations of New Glarus students, the sixth-grade trip to Wyalusing State Park has been one of those school memories that lasts long after the backpacks are unpacked.

This year’s New Glarus Elementary School sixth graders made the annual trip May 14-15, becoming the 60th group of New Glarus students since 1964 to take part in the environmental education experience.

The trip began with a stop at Effigy Mounds National Monument, north of Marquette, Iowa, where students learned about the Woodland peoples and the cultural history of the Driftless Region.

The monument preserves mounds “considered sacred by many Americans, especially the monument’s 20 culturally associated American Indian tribes,” according to the school district.
