New Glarus Volleyball Season Ends at Richland Center

The Glarner Knights took their late-season momentum into a difficult road matchup Thursday, hoping to extend their WIAA tournament run. Their regional opener brought a tough challenge, but it followed a finish worth remembering in New Glarus.

New Glarus Volleyball Season Ends at Richland Center

RICHLAND CENTER, Wis. — The New Glarus Glarner Knights girls volleyball season came to an end Thursday, Oct. 22, with a three-set loss to Richland Center in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 3 regional semifinal.

The fourth-seeded Hornets defeated the fifth-seeded Knights 25-18, 25-16 and 25-18. New Glarus reached 18 points in both the opening and closing sets but could not take a set from the home team.

The result was a disappointing conclusion for a New Glarus squad that entered the playoffs with reason to be encouraged. The Knights had just defeated archrival Belleville in a five-set thriller at home, rallying after losing the opening set and taking the deciding fifth set 15-9.

That rivalry victory, played Oct. 15 before a lively New Glarus crowd on youth and alumni night, offered one of the most memorable moments of the closing stretch. The Knights followed it with reported wins over Wisconsin Heights, Reedsburg and Turner at the Wisconsin Heights Invitational.
