Silver Paddles Gives Bicycles to Local Children
Andrew Elkins and Silver Paddles have turned a personal story of recovery into a New Glarus-area effort that gives children bicycles, outdoor opportunities and another reason to be kids.
Andrew Elkins knows what a bicycle can mean to a child in a small town.
It can be a way to visit friends, get to practice, ride to the pool, explore the neighborhood or simply get outside. Through Silver Paddles, Elkins and his family are helping more children in New Glarus and Monticello experience that freedom.
Silver Paddles, a New Glarus, Wisconsin-based charitable group, has donated bicycles to New Glarus and Monticello elementary schools for several years. The effort started with about 20 bikes each year. This year, the group was able to donate 25 bicycles to each school.
“We hope that each child loves their bike and that it brings them joy and opens up opportunities for them to explore,” Elkins said.
For Elkins and his wife, Kathy, the project grew out of a long commitment to youth service.
