Stewart Tunnel Repairs Continue on Badger State Trail
Stewart Tunnel remains closed as DNR repair plans move forward, with work expected through 2026 to stabilize the historic Badger State Trail landmark, improve drainage and preserve bat habitat near New Glarus.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently reported that Stewart Tunnel is being repaired and continues to be closed for construction. The DNR also reports renovations to the tunnel are expected to continue through 2026. People who use Badger State Trail are encouraged to use caution and keep out of all work zones. Trail users can take Tunnel Road to detour around the closure.
The tunnel has been closed since 2019 after loose rock fell from the ceiling and side walls, creating a safety concern for trail users. Since then, bicyclists and pedestrians have been directed to use Tunnel Road as a detour around the closure.
The repair project is intended to stabilize and eventually reopen one of the Badger State Trail’s best-known landmarks. Plans call for lining the former railroad tunnel with a corrugated metal liner, improving drainage, restoring the trail surface inside the tunnel and completing additional trail work in the surrounding area.
