The Sugar River Raiders are moving on in the WIAA Division 3 boys soccer tournament after defeating Highway 69 rival Monroe 1-0 Thursday, Oct. 22, in a regional semifinal.
The No. 5-seeded Raiders broke a scoreless tie when Sugar River’s Drew Brueggemann scored at the 65:57 mark. That lone goal held up against the No. 12-seeded Cheesemakers, sending the Belleville-New Glarus cooperative into Saturday’s regional championship game.
The close finish was hardly a surprise. When the Green County rivals met Sept. 3, they played to a 1-1 draw despite Sugar River holding a 27-10 advantage in shots on goal. This time, the Raiders found the decisive finish and kept Monroe off the scoreboard.
The victory adds another chapter to Sugar River’s late-season surge. After a rocky start, coach Robert Gentilli’s Raiders went unbeaten in Capitol Conference play, capturing their ninth consecutive conference championship. They also entered the playoffs coming off a 1-0 victory over Big Foot/Williams Bay.
