Sugar River Grinds Out Conference Win Over Wisconsin Heights

With the conference race tightening, Sugar River leaned on patience, pressure and another strong night from goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin before one second-half connection broke through. Another unbeaten league opponent now awaits in New Glarus.

Sugar River Grinds Out Conference Win Over Wisconsin Heights

The Sugar River Raiders boys soccer team kept their perfect conference start intact, grinding out a 1-0 victory over the Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld Vanguards behind a second-half goal from Drew Brueggemann and another shutout from goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin.

After the teams went scoreless through the first half, Sugar River finally broke through at the 58:49 mark. Brueggemann finished the chance off an assist from Harry Hubbard, providing the only goal the Raiders would need.

Wisconsin Heights continued to test Sugar River at the other end, but DeRouin held firm. He finished with 10 saves as the Raiders protected the one-goal advantage through the closing minutes.

For the night Wisconsin Heights had 27 shots on goal to Sugar River's 21. The Vanguards also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, while the Heights goalkeeper was credited with eight saves.
