Sugar River Wins Third Straight With Shutout

Three straight shutouts have changed the feel of Sugar River’s season, and the Raiders carried that defensive edge into Tuesday’s road test at Lakeside Lutheran with Drew Brueggemann again delivering in a tight match and Taydon DeRouin standing tall.

Sugar River Wins Third Straight With Shutout

LAKE MILLS, Wis. — Sugar River kept its late-September surge rolling Tuesday night, edging Lakeside Lutheran 1-0 behind a first-half goal from Drew Brueggemann and another shutout performance from goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin.

Brueggemann broke the scoreless match at the 38:58 mark, giving the Belleville-New Glarus-Monticello cooperative the only goal it would need. From there, the Raiders made the narrow advantage stand up against a Lakeside Lutheran side that continued to apply pressure.

Sugar River finished with 12 shots on goal, while Lakeside Lutheran was credited with 15. DeRouin made nine saves as the Raiders protected the lead and kept the Warriors off the scoreboard.

The victory extended Sugar River’s winning streak to three matches — and all three have been shutouts. The run began with a 1-0 conference victory over Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld on Sept. 22, followed two nights later by a 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Lake Mills.
