University of Wisconsin researchers say tick activity remains a concern across southern Wisconsin this year, reminding hikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts to take precautions before heading into woods, trails and grassy areas.

Tick Season Expected to Be Active Across New Glarus Area

New Glarus residents planning to spend time outdoors this summer may want to keep a close eye on more than just the weather forecast.

According to annual guidance from University of Wisconsin researchers, tick activity is expected to remain a concern across much of Wisconsin, including Green County. The warning comes as warmer temperatures draw more people onto local trails, into wooded areas and out into fields, parks and other outdoor spaces.

“Over the last few field outings, we have collected over two hundred ticks. It’s early in the season to be finding so many at all life stages — larvae, nymphs and adults,” said Johnny Uelmen, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Ticks are a familiar part of Wisconsin summers, but health experts say their range and abundance have increased over the past several years. Blacklegged ticks, commonly known as deer ticks, are of particular concern because they can transmit Lyme disease as well as several other illnesses.
