Veteran Core Has New Glarus Volleyball Thinking Big
With experienced seniors, talented young players and a renewed emphasis on confidence and mental toughness, New Glarus enters the 2026 volleyball season believing it can compete with the Capitol South Conference’s best teams.
There are reasons for optimism around the New Glarus High School volleyball program this fall.
The Glarner Knights return two proven All-Conference performers, welcome back another senior who missed last season because of injury and have several young players who already gained varsity experience as freshmen. Head coach Kayla Zimmerman believes that combination gives New Glarus a chance to take a significant step forward after a difficult 2025 season.
“I’m very optimistic,” Zimmerman said after the opening days of preseason practice. “We’re looking at younger players, and three starters are going to be sophomores. But we also are anchored by these veteran seniors.”
New Glarus finished 7-20 overall and 2-8 in the Capitol South last season, but there were signs of what could be coming. Ellie Brenkman and Kalia Malaise both earned All-Conference recognition, and both return as seniors this year. Brenkman led the conference in hitting percentage and block kills last season, while Malaise ranked among the Capitol South leaders in digs, assists and kills.
