Downtown New Glarus Improvements Take Shape Before Year’s End
Downtown New Glarus is getting a series of enhancements as 2026 draws to a close, including new benches, decorative bicycle parking posts, replacement tree grates and free public Wi-Fi. The improvements are designed to enhance the village’s Swiss-inspired character while making downtown more welcoming and accessible to residents and visitors.

Downtown New Glarus is getting a series of finishing touches as 2026 draws to a close, with new public seating under consideration, decorative bicycle parking fixtures on order and a free outdoor Wi-Fi network nearing activation.

The improvements follow recent concrete work along downtown sidewalks and are intended to bring a more coordinated appearance to the village’s shopping and dining district while adding practical amenities for residents and visitors.

Village Administrator Kelsey Jenson said the village is looking at replacing seven benches along Fifth Avenue, in the area between The Bramble Patch and The Alpine. Four would be on one side of the avenue and three on the other. The proposal was scheduled to go before the Village Board during the week of Oct. 19.

Jenson said several existing benches are aging or in poor condition, and the mix of colors and materials makes the streetscape feel less consistent. Options under consideration include benches made with wood-look composite material and a metal design with a bronze-like finish. If approved, the new benches could arrive within weeks, with installation targeted before Christkindli Market.
