Fall Colors Near Peak as Perfect Weekend Weather Arrives

Green County’s changing hillsides are putting on their autumn display just as a stretch of warm, mostly dry weather arrives. For anyone hoping to take a scenic drive, hike or photograph the colors, the next few days deserve a closer look.

Fall Colors Near Peak as Perfect Weekend Weather Arrives

Fall colors are nearing their peak in New Glarus and across Green County, and a stretch of warm, mostly dry weather through Sunday, Oct. 25, could make this one of the best weekends of the season to enjoy them.

Travel Wisconsin’s Fall Color Report listed Green County at 80% color in an update Wednesday, Oct. 21, up from 65% in its previous report Oct. 16. The statewide tourism organization continues to forecast peak color locally during the fourth week of October — precisely when the weather appears ready to cooperate.

The surrounding region is changing, too. Travel Wisconsin reported Lafayette County at 70% color, Dodgeville and Middleton at 75%, and Madison at 75% in updates posted Oct. 21. The figures are observations for different reporting areas, not measurements of every tree, but they suggest southern Wisconsin is entering a particularly colorful period.

Temperatures in New Glarus are forecast to reach the 70s Thursday through Sunday, with some sunshine each day and little chance of rain. The forecast suggests Saturday and Sunday may offer the best overall combination of developing fall colors and comfortable conditions for getting outdoors.
