Green County Halts Data Centers, Delays Rental Rules

Green County supervisors approved a 12-month pause on data center development, sent proposed short-term rental regulations back to committee and accepted a donation that will fully fund a second sheriff’s K-9 unit soon.

Green County Halts Data Centers, Delays Rental Rules

MONROE, Wis. — Green County supervisors approved a one-year moratorium on data center development Tuesday but stopped short of adopting new short-term rental regulations, returning that proposal to committee for additional work.

The two land-use measures generated the most discussion during the July 14 meeting of the Green County Board of Supervisors. All 31 supervisors were present.

The data center moratorium passed after supervisors discussed concerns about energy and water consumption, limited public information surrounding some developments and the need to create rules before a proposal reaches Green County.

The measure prevents the county from accepting or approving zoning applications, conditional use permits, rezoning requests or other land-use approvals for data centers for 12 months. State law would allow the county to extend the moratorium for another six months if it can demonstrate that work on regulations is underway.
