A parking lot immediately east of the Swiss Historical Village & Museum could eventually be put to a new use as the Village of New Glarus begins considering the future of the property.

The New Glarus Historic Preservation Commission has already reviewed the potential redevelopment of the village-owned parcel adjacent to the Swiss Historical Village & Museum and recommended approval that would repurpose the lot. The matter will now go before the New Glarus Village Board on Wednesday evening, when trustees are expected to discuss the property and could approve the next step in the process.

The parking lot is already a separate parcel owned by the Village of New Glarus. The Historical Village no longer needs the parking area, opening the possibility that the land could eventually be used in another way.

Residential development would appear to be one possibility given the parcel’s location and its proximity to an established residential neighborhood and is already zoned R-1. Duplexes, townhomes or another relatively small-scale housing project could potentially fit the site, or one or two larger lots for a new single-family home.
