Green County Model Railroaders Keep a Hobby on Track
Nearly five decades after launching its annual train show, the Green County Model Railroaders continue bringing hobbyists together across southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois to share layouts, skills, new technology and a love of trains.
Model railroading can be as simple or as elaborate as its builder wants. For members of the Green County Model Railroaders, it is also something more: a reason to gather, swap ideas and introduce other people to a hobby that continues to change with the times.
The nonprofit club brings together everyone from people with a casual interest in model trains to experienced modelers who have spent years developing their skills. Members come from throughout southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, gathering eight times during the year to share projects and knowledge.
“We share projects we are working on and our knowledge of the hobby with each other,” club President Kevin Johnson said.
The club’s biggest public showcase is its annual Model Train Show & Swap Meet, which is marking its 48th year. This year’s show will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26-27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Stateline Ice and Community Expo, 1632 Fourth Avenue West in Monroe.
