Green County’s New World Cup Team
With the U.S. eliminated, an ancestry map gives Green County a reason to adopt Switzerland before tonight’s World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina — complete with one-county pride, underdog odds and a familiar red-and-white look.
The United States is out of the World Cup, but Green County still has a team.
A map on X.com recently compared the dominant local ancestry associated with six countries still competing in the tournament and it offers a compelling reason for New Glarus-area fans to shift their allegiance to Switzerland. Nearly the entire nation belongs to England on the map, while other regions are claimed by Norway, France, Spain and Belgium.
Then there is one small island in southern Wisconsin.
Green County is the only county in the United States where Swiss ancestry exceeds each of the other five ancestry groups represented on the map. In this particular World Cup comparison, Switzerland has exactly one American county in its corner.
Ours.
So when Switzerland faces defending champion Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinals Saturday night, the matchup comes with a distinctly local interpretation: Green County against the rest of America.
