The ribbons, costumes and maypole in this photo capture a piece of New Glarus history that many residents still remember, but younger generations may never have seen.

The photo was taken Labor Day weekend in 1987 during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Wilhelm Tell Play. The scene is 2nd Street, looking southeast at the intersection with 4th Avenue, where the New Glarus Swiss Dancers performed in the street as spectators watched from the curb.
