How New Glarus Firefighters Will Elect Their Next Chief

With Kevin Hendrickson stepping away from the chief’s position, the New Glarus Volunteer Fire Department will choose its next leader in January. The selection rests with its own members, by rules governing nominations, voting and who can take part.

How New Glarus Firefighters Will Elect Their Next Chief

The New Glarus Volunteer Fire Department will elect its next fire chief at its annual membership meeting Monday, Jan. 4, 2027, after current Chief Kevin Hendrickson decided not to seek another term.

The choice will be made by department members rather than through a public election or selection by the fire district board. Hendrickson will remain chief until Jan. 4, when the newly elected chief is expected to take over after the membership meeting concludes.

Under the department’s election process, members nominate fellow firefighters for the position during the annual meeting, held on the first Monday in January. Any current department member is eligible to be nominated.

There typically are no official nominees before the meeting, although members may ask potential candidates in advance whether they would accept a nomination. Nominations and the election take place on the same night.
