New Glarus Approves Public Wi-Fi, Ott Haus Liquor License
The New Glarus Village Board unanimously approved a free public Wi-Fi network for portions of downtown and a liquor license for the new owners of Ott Haus, while also supporting exterior improvements at Puempel’s Olde Tavern Wednesday night.
New Glarus will move ahead with a free downtown public Wi-Fi network using federal pandemic-relief funding, while the Village Board also cleared the way for Ott Haus to reopen under new ownership during its July 15 meeting.
The Wi-Fi project will use the new New Glarus Public Library as its anchor, with outdoor equipment extending free internet access into nearby streets and parts of the downtown area. Green County will pay the approximately $20,000 cost using remaining American Rescue Plan Act funds designated for broadband projects.
A representative of Green County Development Corporation told trustees the project is intended primarily to improve digital access benefiting visitors and festival vendors who sometimes struggle with cellular service while processing credit card transactions in downtown New Glarus. The network could also help some who lack affordable or reliable internet service.
Trustees approved the project unanimously after asking questions about its coverage area, maintenance costs, security and the village’s long-term responsibilities.
