New Glarus Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kevin Hendrickson has decided not to seek another term as chief, ending his time at the department’s helm while planning to continue serving as a volunteer firefighter. He notified members of the department at their meeting a few weeks ago.
Hendrickson succeeded Josh Kammerud and began his tenure in early 2024. For Hendrickson, stepping away from the leadership role is not the same as stepping away from the department that has been part of his life for almost 24 years.
“I am not fully retiring from the department,” Hendrickson said. “I plan to stay on and make it until at least my 25th anniversary and maybe beyond.”
His reason for taking the chief’s job was straightforward: He wanted to protect the progress made by those who came before him. “The previous chiefs had all left the department in a better place than when they took over and I did not want to see a regression,” he said. “I just hope I am leaving the department in a better place.”
