New Glarus Has Written More Than Its Own History
As the new New Glarus Public Library opens, the village can look to its own shelves for a reminder that a small Wisconsin community has produced an unusually wide range of authors and books.
The opening of the new New Glarus Public Library is more than a building project. It is a chance for the village to look at books not only as something borrowed from the outside world, but as something New Glarus has helped create.
For a community of its size, New Glarus has produced, inspired or supported a remarkable number of authors. Some wrote nationally known books. Some preserved local history. Some helped explain grief, health, faith, immigration, Swiss heritage, cemetery history and even romance set in America’s Little Switzerland.
The following list is intended as a broad and practical inventory of books written or co-written by authors from New Glarus or strongly associated with New Glarus. It includes New Glarus natives, longtime residents and local historians whose work is closely tied to the village.
