The New Glarus Glarner Knights wasted no time announcing their postseason intentions Friday night, Oct. 23, scoring on their first offensive play and rolling to a commanding 48-8 victory over the Bloomer Blackhawks in the opening round of the WIAA Division 5 football playoffs.
Senior Tucker Sysko delivered two electrifying touchdown receptions, senior Carson Prechel rushed for three scores, and a swarming New Glarus defense repeatedly turned away the Blackhawks to send the Knights into the second round for the second consecutive season.
On an unusually mild late-October evening, with the kickoff temperature at 62 degrees, New Glarus gave the home crowd something to cheer about almost immediately. Sysko fielded the opening kickoff off the turf at his own 20-yard line and raced 34 yards to the Bloomer 46.
On the very next play, senior quarterback Quinn Marty launched a deep pass to Sysko, who hauled it in near the 5-yard line and raced into the end zone. Just 13 seconds into the contest, New Glarus had stunned the Blackhawks with a 46-yard touchdown. Freshman Brock Weeden added the extra point, and the Glarner Knights led 7-0 just like that.
