New Glarus School Board to Set Tax Levy, Adopt Budget

A larger school property tax levy and a lower tax rate are both on the table Monday as New Glarus school officials finalize next year’s finances. The board also has several other proposals and student activities to consider this fall.

New Glarus School Board to Set Tax Levy, Adopt Budget

The School District of New Glarus Board of Education will consider adopting its 2026-27 budget and setting a $9.53 million property tax levy when it meets Monday, Oct. 26, at 7:15 p.m. in the New Glarus High School library/media center.

The proposed levy of $9,532,645 is $481,862, or 5.32%, higher than last year. Yet the projected school tax rate would fall from $9.72 to $9.50 per $1,000 of equalized property value, a decrease of 2.25%.

The difference reflects growth in the district’s overall property tax base. Equalized property value is projected to climb 7.75%, from about $930.8 million to just over $1 billion, outpacing the increase in the amount of taxes the district plans to collect.

For individual homeowners, however, a lower districtwide tax rate does not guarantee a lower school tax bill. Changes in a property’s assessed value and the school levy tax credit, among other factors, can affect what a homeowner actually pays. The district estimates that about 3.5 percentage points of the levy increase is attributable to new construction.
