Power Line Rebuild Will Bring Major Grid Upgrades Through New Glarus
A major electric transmission rebuild is coming to Green County, and it will run straight through the New Glarus area. American Transmission Company (ATC) has confirmed that it will rebuild a 27-mile stretch of aging 69-kilovolt power line between Monroe and Verona, which ATC identifies as Y-42, replacing infrastructure that dates back nearly three-quarters of a century.

ATC is the company responsible for the large power lines and grid infrastructure that bring electricity into communities across Wisconsin. They maintain the long-distance transmission network, upgrade aging lines, and add capacity when the region grows. While our local utility delivers power to our homes, ATC handles the backbone system that delivers power to communities like New Glarus.

According to ATC, the project is driven primarily by age and condition. “The poles in the project area date to the 1950s and need to be replaced,” the spokesperson said, noting that the upgrade also includes improvements to the North Monroe Substation. For residents who have long seen the familiar wooden poles along the corridor, the rebuild represents one of the largest transmission updates southern Wisconsin has seen in years.
