Representatives of Wisconsin Housing Preservation Corp., the Village of New Glarus, Green County Development Corporation and the construction team gathered Tuesday, Oct. 20, for the formal groundbreaking of Prairie Haus Senior, the second phase of the Prairie Haus housing development on Elmer Road.

The $10.8 million project will add 50 apartments for adults age 55 and older at 1003 Elmer Road, next to the original Prairie Haus building. Construction is already underway, making Tuesday’s ceremony a celebration of the partnerships and years of work needed to bring the expansion to life.

About 30 guests attended, including representatives of the Village Board, village staff, Green County, the developer, contractors and other community organizations. Speakers focused on the shortage of suitable housing for older residents and the importance of allowing them to remain near friends and family.

Wisconsin Housing Preservation Corp. (WHPC) had hoped to proceed quickly with the second phase after its first 40-unit Prairie Haus building opened in December 2020. Instead, the disappearance of financing programs and other funding challenges delayed the project for more than five years.
