Town of New Glarus to Weigh ATV, UTV Road Access

A November meeting in the Town of New Glarus will give residents a chance to weigh in on whether local rural roads should be opened to ATV and UTV traffic after months of debate.

Town of New Glarus to Weigh ATV, UTV Road Access

The Town of New Glarus will soon face a defining decision over whether to open its rural roads to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility-terrain vehicles (UTVs)—a topic that has stirred debate for months and divided residents. The upcoming vote, scheduled for November 12, follows a series of meetings designed to ensure both supporters and opponents have an equal opportunity to present their case.

How We Got Here

The discussion stems from a Green County ordinance adopted in 2021 that sets rules for ATV and UTV use on county trunk highways. The Green County Sheriff’s Department has encouraged individual towns to align with the county ordinance for consistency and ease of enforcement. The Town of New Glarus, however, has not yet adopted any local ordinance opening its roads, opting instead to give residents a direct say before making a final decision.
