Village Ends EMS Records Fight, But Questions Remain
New Glarus says it will stop spending taxpayer money on litigation tied to records sought from New Glarus Area EMS, even as village officials maintain the organization should have been subject to public records law.
The Village of New Glarus says it will no longer pursue litigation aimed at forcing New Glarus Area EMS (NGAEMS) to turn over records requested under Wisconsin public records law. The decision was announced in a statement released late Thursday, and backup documents provided at the same time show a months-long dispute over transparency, funding, and whether NGAEMS qualified as a public entity under state law.
Village officials said the choice was based on the cost and uncertainty of continuing the case, not a change in their view that the public had a right to see the records. In its statement, the village said it still believes transparency and accountability are essential when an organization performs services closely tied to public operations.
