York Prairie Workday Planned for Invasive Species Awareness Weekend
Volunteers will gather June 20 at York Prairie near New Glarus during Invasive Species Awareness Weekend, helping remove invasive weeds from one of Wisconsin’s rare remaining prairie remnants.
Volunteers are invited to help remove invasive weeds from York Prairie State Natural Area during Invasive Species Awareness Weekend on Saturday, June 20, about 8 miles from New Glarus.
The York Prairie Invasive Weed Pulling Workday will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marbleseed Unit on York Valley Road. The event is part of a statewide Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources effort to raise awareness about invasive species and encourage people to take action to protect native habitats.
“York Prairie is a wonderful little gem just 8 miles from New Glarus on Highway 39,” said Shannon Roznoski, easement stewardship manager for Driftless Area Land Conservancy. “From the road, it might look like just another fallow field or pasture; however, York Prairie is a quality remnant dry prairie that is home to grassland birds, prairie insects, and several species of rare plants.”
