Blasting Debate Dominates Village Board Meeting
The New Glarus Village Board approved a Prairie Haus II blasting permit with added safeguards after a lengthy public discussion, backed a new optional electric rate and approved action on redevelopment of a village-owned parking lot.
A full Village Hall boardroom greeted trustees Wednesday night as residents returned for a lengthy discussion over possible blasting at the planned Prairie Haus II senior housing project.
The blasting permit for the project at 1003 Elmer Road dominated the Sept. 2 Village Board meeting, coming back before trustees two weeks after the board unanimously tabled the application so additional protections for neighboring property owners could be considered. At the Aug. 19 meeting, several residents raised concerns about potential property damage and asked the village to strengthen preventive measures before issuing a permit.
After nearly two hours of discussion Wednesday, the board moved forward with the permit while adding conditions intended to provide greater documentation, communication and accountability if blasting ultimately becomes necessary.
Prairie Haus Blasting May Not Be Needed
The permit does not mean blasting will definitely occur.
