An American Red Cross blood drive organized by New Glarus High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapters collected 27 units of blood Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Erin Speth, a business education teacher at the school, reported the final total after donor deferrals. The drive took place at New Glarus High School, 1701 2nd St.

The contribution comes as the Red Cross continues to emphasize the need for volunteer donors. The organization reported a national blood crisis in July, when summer collections fell sharply, and says someone in the United States needs blood or platelets every two seconds. Donated blood supports patients undergoing cancer treatment, surgery and emergency care.
