Brueggemann Lifts Sugar River Past Big Foot/Williams Bay

One goal was enough for Sugar River in its final tuneup before the WIAA tournament, as the Raiders leaned on Drew Brueggemann, Tyler Fink and another shutout before turning their attention to a familiar Highway 69 opponent next week.

WALWORTH, Wis. — Sugar River did not need much offense Thursday night. One goal and a shutout were enough for the Raiders to grind out a 1-0 varsity boys soccer win over Big Foot/Williams Bay in their final scheduled match before the WIAA tournament.

Drew Brueggemann supplied the goal for Sugar River, with Tyler Fink earning the assist. From there, the Raiders protected the one-goal margin and finished off another clean sheet — exactly the kind of result that can matter when the postseason arrives and every mistake gets magnified.

The win sends Sugar River, the Belleville-New Glarus cooperative, into tournament play with some momentum behind a season that has steadily gathered strength. The Raiders recently secured another Capitol Conference championship, extending a run of nine straight conference titles, and have played some of their best soccer as the calendar has turned toward October.

Brueggemann has been right in the middle of that late-season push. He scored four times in a 6-0 win over Cambridge/Deerfield/Waterloo on Oct. 6, then converted a penalty kick and assisted on another goal two days later as Sugar River tied Lodi 2-2 to clinch the conference crown. His goal Thursday was the only one the Raiders needed.
