The New Glarus Glarner Knights refused to let their archrivals leave their castle with a victory, rallying from a rough opening set to beat the Belleville Wildcats 3-2 in a five-set thriller at New Glarus High School.
Belleville grabbed the early momentum with a 25-14 win in the first set, but New Glarus answered instead of folding. The Knights took the second set 25-19 and the third 25-20, turning the match — and the gym — back in their favor.
The Wildcats forced one more chapter by taking the fourth set 25-19. That sent the rivalry match to a decisive fifth set, where New Glarus delivered its strongest closing stretch of the night and finished off Belleville 15-9.
The emotions matched the stakes throughout the night. With youth and alumni night adding to the atmosphere, the New Glarus gym had the feel of a rivalry match from the opening serve through the final point.
