There are hints of spring in the air this week — including a report of the first robin sighting near the golf course — and with it comes that familiar late-February energy in New Glarus. We’re heading into the final weeks of the high school basketball season with plenty on the line. The Glarner girls capped a thrilling run by clinching the conference championship last week and followed it up with a playoff win last night. Now the boys have a chance Thursday to capture a share of the title and accomplish something that has happened only twice before in school history — 1981-82 and 2023-24 — with both the boys and girls winning conference crowns in the same season. The girls continue tournament play, the boys tip off postseason action next week, and before we know it, summer will be knocking on the door.

Photos of the Week

This last week was senior night for the New Glarus Glarner Knights boys basketball team. This year the Knights will be saying goodbye to Tatem Stampfli, Matt Roth and Grady Johnson. Not only has each contributed in other sports, they made this year boys basketball season special, too. And although they will be graduating soon, as the athletic department likes to say, "Once a Knight, always a Knight." Good luck, boys.

Something We Noticed
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the United States — a milestone birthday for the nation — and as luck would have it, July 4 falls on a Saturday.
New Glarus has never been known for grand Fourth of July celebrations. But maybe this is the year to change that. Two hundred and fifty years feels like something worth marking, and there’s plenty to celebrate close to home.
Nothing elaborate. Nothing overproduced. Just a good old-fashioned New Glarus street dance — live music, cold New Glarus beer, lawn chairs, kids running around, neighbors catching up long after sunset. Simple. Local. Memorable.
What do you think?
