New Glarus 360 Letters to the Editor Policy
New Glarus 360 is inviting community voices while setting clear standards for civility, relevance, and transparency in letters to the editor.
As part of its effort to encourage thoughtful community discussion while maintaining clear editorial standards, New Glarus 360 has formally established a Letters to the Editor policy. The policy outlines who may submit letters, what kinds of content are welcome, and how submissions will be handled before publication.
Letters to the editor can serve as one of the most direct ways for readers to respond to local issues, share opinions, and take part in civic life. For a community-centered news platform such as New Glarus 360, that kind of participation can add perspective and strengthen public conversation when it is handled fairly and respectfully.
Under the policy, letters may be submitted by current residents of New Glarus or adjacent communities, people who previously lived in those areas, those who attended school there, and people who work or once worked in the community. All letters must come from real people using real names. Anonymous submissions will not be accepted.
The policy also sets expectations for tone and content. Letters should remain civil, even when they express disagreement. Criticism of issues, policies, or public actions is allowed, but personal attacks, name-calling, and inflammatory language will not be published. Writers are also asked to stay focused on local issues, events, and topics that matter to the New Glarus area.
New Glarus 360 says letters should be original work and not previously published elsewhere. In most cases, submissions should be no longer than 500 words. Writers must include their full name, address, and phone number for verification, though only the writer’s name and community will be published with the letter. And unlike traditional newspapers, New Glarus 360 will accept photos, video, and other multimedia if the writer created it or has written permission to share it on our news site.
The policy makes clear that submissions may be edited for length, clarity, style, and to meet editorial standards. It also offers guidance for writers, encouraging them to make their point clearly, support their views with context or examples, and, when possible, offer constructive ideas or solutions. The preferred tone is conversational but professional, similar to speaking directly to neighbors.
Because New Glarus 360 is a digital platform, the policy also allows writers to submit between one and five relevant photos, hyperlinks, graphics, or charts with their letter. Those materials must be owned by the writer, used with permission, or be in the public domain.
Letters may be submitted by email to editor@newglarus360.com. By submitting a letter, writers grant New Glarus 360 the right to publish it online and in related formats. The publication’s broader editorial standards emphasize clarity, local relevance, and consistency across its coverage.
For readers who have strong views on local government, schools, business, development, community traditions, or other civic matters, the policy opens the door to participation while making clear that respectful discourse remains the standard. New Glarus 360 is inviting voices from the community, but it is also making clear that productive conversation works best when it is grounded in accountability, relevance, and respect.
