Five years ago today, Melissa Ann Trumpy disappeared. The 37-year-old mother of three from rural Monticello was last seen Oct. 26, 2021, and despite searches involving numerous agencies in Wisconsin and Illinois, she has not been found.
For her family and friends, Oct. 26 has become an anniversary marked not by answers, but by another year of uncertainty. Their efforts to keep Melissa’s name before the public have continued even as the disappearance has received less attention in the news.
The passage of time has not ended the investigation. In a recent interview with New Glarus 360, Green County Sheriff Cody Kanable confirmed that his department continues to assign a detective to the case and work with Illinois investigators.
“For us, that case is very tragic,” Kanable said. “But the case is still active.”
"If a tip comes in, or if information comes in, [the detective] follows up on it to see if it’s something that we can act on,” Kanable said. He said the department is working with law enforcement partners in Illinois in hopes of reaching a resolution, with “the ultimate goal of finding Melissa."
