A one-score game at halftime turned into a Senior Night runaway Friday at The Bank of New Glarus Field, where the New Glarus Glarner Knights closed the regular season with a 35-7 win over Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg.
The setting matched the stakes. Temperatures were around 48 degrees early and falling toward 42 by the end, with clear skies and wind gusts reaching roughly 15 to 17 mph. New Glarus entered the night 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities (SWAL) Conference, still with a chance to earn a share of the conference title if Darlington lost.
There are a lot of Knights in high school sports, but only one Glarner Knights. That distinction mattered Friday night, with Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg bringing its own Knights nickname to New Glarus.
The Glarner Knights struck first with 6:51 left in the opening quarter. From around their own 25-yard line, Quinn Marty connected with senior Tucker Sysko, who turned the completion into a long touchdown. The extra point made it 7-0.
