MONROE, Wis. — The Green County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday, Sept. 8, for a presentation and discussion examining the condition of the county’s Highway Department facilities and the challenges facing its main Monroe campus. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Green County Highway Shop, 2813 6th St.

Beyond approval of minutes from the board’s Aug. 13 meeting, the facility assessment is the only substantive item on Tuesday’s agenda. No resolution, construction proposal or spending authorization is listed for consideration.

The assessment provides a detailed look at a Highway Department operation spread across six locations — Monroe, New Glarus, Brodhead, GG, J/C and Attica — with 15 buildings used for heated, tempered and cold storage. At the main 5.5-acre Monroe site, the department says it had 78,400 square feet of space before the new jail and Sheriff’s Office project, compared with 62,800 square feet afterward, a 20% reduction.

Much of Tuesday’s presentation is expected to focus on the age and condition of buildings still in use. The administration, crew and heated garage building was constructed in 1964 and is identified as having code-compliance issues, inadequate functions, sanitation and privacy concerns, deterioration and an insufficient water supply for efficiently washing trucks.
