Green County Board supervisors spent Tuesday night examining the condition of the county Highway Department’s remaining facilities, hearing that aging buildings, shrinking space and increasingly large equipment are creating safety and operational problems that officials say cannot continue indefinitely.
The presentation was the second of three planned presentations on the Highway Department and was the sole agenda item for the meeting. This month’s discussion focused on the physical condition and limitations of the department’s existing buildings and grounds.
About 20% of the Highway Department’s buildings and 30% of its land have been lost as part of the county jail project, further tightening an operation that was already struggling with aging facilities and limited space.
Richard Marti, the long-tenured Maintenance Director for Green County, walked supervisors through a presentation detailing problems throughout the remaining Highway Department complex. He said the buildings are showing their age and approaching the end of their usable life.
