Kayaker Dies After Capsizing on Sugar River

BRODHEAD, Wis. — A 69-year-old Madison man died Tuesday afternoon after his kayak capsized on the Sugar River below a dam near Brodhead, according to the Green County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:29 p.m. in a remote stretch of the river in the Town of Decatur, about 1.8 miles northwest of Brodhead. Authorities said the man was kayaking with a group when he moved ahead of the others and encountered trouble in swift-moving water.

Emergency crews were dispatched after a 911 caller reported an unresponsive person on the riverbank who was not breathing. Using GPS technology, dispatchers were able to pinpoint the location in an area with limited access.
