Nearly 92% of New Glarus High School Students Join Activities

Nearly 92% of New Glarus High School students participated in at least one school activity last year, and more than half took part in three or more, according to participation data presented to the New Glarus School Board on Monday.

The report, presented by New Glarus School District Athletic Director Mitchell Cernek, covered athletics, clubs and other co-curricular activities. It showed 277 students, or 91.72% of the high school, involved in at least one activity; 222 students, or 73.51%, involved in at least two; and 156 students, or 51.66%, involved in three or more.

The freshman class stood out most. Seventy-seven of 78 freshmen — 98.72% — participated in at least one activity. Cernek said the district has worked to get students connected early, when they are more likely to stay involved throughout high school.

“We really wanted to push first to get ... all students being involved in at least two or more activities,” Cernek told the board. “We’re still working ... to try to find ways to get students connected to an organization.”
