New Glarus Has Spring Football to Watch
The championship Glarus Orks of Switzerland return Saturday, giving New Glarus football fans a team to follow until the Packers, Badgers and Glarner Knights are back.
It’s April in Wisconsin, which means football fans in New Glarus are stuck in that strange stretch of the calendar when the appetite is still there, but the games are not. The Green Bay Packers are months away. The Wisconsin Badgers are not playing. The New Glarus Glarner Knights are not under the Friday night lights. For people already missing the sound of shoulder pads and scoreboards, that can feel like a long wait.
But New Glarus may have an answer, and it happens to come from half a world away. The Glarus Orks, the Swiss American Football League team with roots in the canton that gave New Glarus its name, are back in action. Their opening game can be viewed live here on New Glarus 360 at 11 a.m. Saturday as the Orks take on the Luzern Lions. For a football-hungry town with deep ties to Glarus, Switzerland, it may be the next best thing to having the home team back on the field.
