New Glarus Prepares for Busy Polkafest Weekend
Road closures, an expanded outdoor beverage district and thousands of expected visitors will transform downtown New Glarus as Polkafest and Beer, Bacon & Cheese Weekend return for one of the community's busiest weekends of the year.
New Glarus is preparing for one of its busiest weekends of the year as Polkafest and Beer, Bacon & Cheese Weekend return to downtown, bringing live music, food, beverages and an expected influx of visitors from across Wisconsin and beyond.
Village officials have announced several temporary road closures and expanded open beverage district hours to accommodate the festivities, which are expected to draw thousands of people to New Glarus throughout the weekend.
The annual celebration combines the sounds of traditional polka music with the flavors of Wisconsin, making it one of the premier summer events in New Glarus and a major draw for the downtown business district.
The first closure begins at 8 a.m. Thursday when 1st Street between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue closes to traffic to accommodate the festival tent that will be erected downtown. That closure will remain in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday.
