Prechel Scores 4 Times as Glarner Knights Roll Past Cuba City
New Glarus opened its first season in the SWAL with a 26-7 road win at Cuba City, sparked by Carson Prechel’s dazzling first-quarter touchdown, his first of four, a defense that kept the Cubans scoreless through three quarters and a road crowd that made itself heard.
CUBA CITY — Carson Prechel looked like he was headed out of bounds.
Instead, the New Glarus senior turned what appeared to be the end of a good play into the highlight of the night.
With 2:04 remaining in the first quarter, the New Glarus quarterback Brock Roth completed a pass to senior wide receiver Tucker Sysko, who lateralled the ball backward to Prechel as part of a perfectly executed hook-and-lateral. Near the Cuba City 27-yard line, Prechel appeared destined for the sideline with three defenders collapsing around him. At the last instant, he juked back toward the middle of the field, escaped the pursuit and scampered the rest of the way to complete a 57-yard touchdown play.
The extra point was unsuccessful, but the play gave New Glarus a 6-0 lead and provided an early jolt in what became an impressive introduction to the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League (SWAL) conference.
The Glarner Knights struck again with 6:49 remaining in the second quarter, finishing another drive in the end zone capped by another Prechel score to extend the lead to 12-0. This time the extra point was good, making it 13-0.
New Glarus, and Carson Prechel, were not finished.
