MCFARLAND, Wis. — The Sugar River Raiders could not overcome a difficult opening half Wednesday, falling 5-1 to the McFarland Spartans on the road.
McFarland scored four times before halftime, sending the Raiders into the break facing a 4-0 deficit. The match was played beneath cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s.
Sugar River answered in the second half when Drew Brueggemann converted a free kick from 20 yards out. It was the Raiders’ only goal of the match as McFarland completed the 5-1 victory.
The Raiders return to conference play Thursday, Sept. 10, when they host Columbus in New Glarus.
