Glarner Knights Survive Late Mineral Point Rally, Win 28-21

New Glarus built a 14-point halftime lead, answered Mineral Point’s second-half rally with timely offense and then turned the Pointers away near the goal line in the final seconds to preserve a hard-fought 28-21 road victory Friday night.

MINERAL POINT, Wis. — The New Glarus Glarner Knights had controlled much of Friday night’s game against Mineral Point. In the closing minutes, they had to survive it.

They did.

New Glarus stopped Mineral Point on fourth down near the goal line with less than 30 seconds remaining, preserving a 28-21 victory on a cold, damp night that turned into a fourth-quarter fight. The game had started an hour earlier than originally scheduled after both school districts agreed to move up kickoff in an effort to avoid storms moving into the area.

The Glarner Knights led 14-0 at halftime and 21-7 early in the fourth quarter, but Mineral Point refused to disappear. The Pointers scored twice in the final period and drove all the way to the New Glarus goal line on their final possession before the Glarner Knights’ defense delivered one last stand.

New Glarus struck first behind its running game.
