T-Mobile has increased 5G capacity and adjusted coverage near New Glarus ahead of Oktoberfest, while AT&T says it has also recently expanded coverage and capacity in the community. Verizon did not provide information about its local network or preparations for the festival.
The improvements come before thousands of visitors converge on downtown New Glarus for Oktoberfest Sept. 24-27. Cellular service has traditionally become unreliable during major local festivals, sometimes leaving users with signal bars but little ability to load webpages, send messages or complete other data-heavy tasks.
“To enhance connectivity in the New Glarus area ahead of Oktoberfest and year-round, we have made two updates to the nearby site,” T-Mobile Senior Communications Manager Katie Frey said. “We increased the 5G capacity to handle influxes in usage. We optimized the site to increase coverage.”
T-Mobile did not identify the site, explain what equipment was added or say how much additional traffic it can accommodate. The company also did not specify whether the coverage optimization involved adjustments to antenna direction, power, software or another part of the network.
