POSTVILLE, Wis. — The Town of York Board voted Tuesday night to end its contract with New Glarus Area EMS when the agreement expires at the end of 2026 and pursue membership in the Sugar River EMS District.
The decision followed visits with both ambulance services Sept. 3. Board members first met with New Glarus Area EMS at its Third Street station before touring Sugar River EMS at the New Glarus Fire Department.
Board members repeatedly said New Glarus Area EMS has fulfilled its responsibilities to York and that they were not aware of occasions when the service failed to respond. However, they concluded that Sugar River offered advantages in response time, staffing, paramedic availability and long-term stability.
The board approved separate motions to notify New Glarus Area EMS that York will end its contract and to seek membership in Sugar River for the portion of the town currently covered by the New Glarus service. Other portions of York receive ambulance coverage from Blanchardville EMS.
