Voters in New Glarus and several neighboring towns will be able to cast absentee ballots beginning Tuesday, July 28, ahead of Wisconsin’s Tuesday, August 11, partisan primary election.

In-person absentee voting locations and hours vary by municipality. While the Village of New Glarus offers regular weekday hours, voters in several neighboring towns must schedule an appointment with their municipal clerk.

Any qualified voter who is unable or unwilling to vote at the polls on Election Day may request an absentee ballot. Voters do not need to provide a reason for voting absentee, but they must be registered in the municipality where they intend to vote.

Most voters must also provide a copy of an acceptable photo identification document when requesting an absentee ballot. Different requirements may apply to indefinitely confined, military, overseas and hospitalized voters.

How to Request a Mailed Ballot

Absentee ballots may be requested from the voter’s municipal clerk by mail, email or fax, or through the MyVote Wisconsin website.

A written request generally must include the voter’s registered voting address, the address where the ballot should be mailed if different, the voter’s signature and a copy of the required photo identification.

The deadline for most voters to request an absentee ballot by mail is 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6. Because completed ballots must be returned by Election Day, voters are encouraged to submit requests early.

Village of New Glarus

Village of New Glarus residents may vote absentee at Village Hall, 319 Second St., from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays beginning July 28.

The village will offer extended hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, August 7, the final day of in-person absentee voting.

The village will also conduct a public test of its Dominion DS200 optical-scan voting equipment at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, in the Village Hall boardroom. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 11.

Town of New Glarus

In-person absentee voting for the Town of New Glarus is scheduled to take place at the new Town Garage, N8799 Hayes Lane, along Wisconsin Highway 39.

Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from July 28 through August 6. Additional voting hours will be offered from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, August 7.

Election Day voting is also expected to be held at the new garage, provided electrical service is installed and the building is ready in time. The town’s election webpage currently says the town will announce its Election Day polling place when additional information becomes available. Polling hours will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Town of Exeter

Town of Exeter residents may vote absentee at the town clerk’s office, W2998 State Road 92, Belleville.

Voting will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from July 28 through August 6. Additional hours will be offered from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7.

Town of Mount Pleasant

Town of Mount Pleasant residents may vote absentee by appointment from July 28 through August 7 at N6975 Marshall Bluff Road, Monticello.

Town of Perry

Town of Perry residents may vote absentee by appointment through Town Clerk Stephanie Zwettler.

The town’s notice states that ballots may be returned by mail, in person or through an authorized drop box. With limited exceptions for voters with disabilities, a completed absentee ballot must be delivered by the voter who cast it.

Town of York

Town of York residents may vote absentee by appointment from July 28 through August 7 at N8105 Postville Road, Blanchardville.

Appointments may be made by calling Clerk-Treasurer Brenda Hackbart at 608-527-8125.

Returning an Absentee Ballot

Completed absentee ballots must reach the appropriate municipal clerk in time to be delivered to the polling place before polls close at 8 p.m. August 11. Ballots received after the polls close will not be counted.

Voters should carefully complete the absentee ballot certificate envelope, including the required voter signature, witness signature and witness address.

Voters may check their registration, request an absentee ballot, view a sample ballot and track the status of a mailed ballot through MyVote Wisconsin.
